Smithland is a city located in the far-western area of Livingston County, Kentucky. It is positioned along the eastern side of the Ohio River which separates Illinois and Kentucky. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were almost 300 people living in Smithland in 2016. Smithland is the 3rd largest city in Livingston County.
In the 1790s, Zachariah Cox sent a man named John Smith to scout a located for a new city. Eventually, this chosen site would develop to become modern-day Smithland. The town has endured many hardships since its establishment. Although it was platted in 1805, the community was not recorded until 1837. Today, Smithland is a quaint community that is home to a downtown area where the local church, locally owned businesses, and historical homes are located. Although the population of Smithland is small, it is a beautiful community that is home to friendly people.
